1. Romania: AI agents are moving beyond the chatbot stage — Termene.ro hosts AI Operator Day today, while Romanian AI Days is coming in September

Today, August 20, AI Operator Day is taking place at the Termene.ro headquarters in Green Court, Bucharest. The practical workshop is aimed at entrepreneurs and managers who want to implement AI agents inside their companies. Termene.ro says it is already running more than 50 active AI agents in its own data center, with around 4,000 executions in a single day, more than 100 installed skills, and a reported daily cost of $167 for the entire fleet. Participants work with real hardware, go through a 40-question assessment and are expected to leave with a concrete implementation roadmap for their own company. The event is organized by Termene.ro, with three people presented as guides: Adrian Dragomir, founder of Termene.ro and Sferal AI, Monica Ducu, business consultant and trainer, and Alexandru Mărăcineanu, CTO of Sferal AI. No list of companies attending the August 20 edition has been published, although the event website features participants from previous editions, including Cristina Bâtlan, Alex Belei of Agri România and Liviu Achim, co-founder of Pergola Prestige.

Also in Romania, registration is open for Romanian AI Days, scheduled for September 18–19 at the Polytechnic University of Bucharest. The event is more focused on the research and industry community, with keynotes, public-policy discussions and startup sessions, and speakers including Petar Veličković, Răzvan Pașcanu and Viorica Pătrăucean from Google DeepMind, Traian Rebedea from NVIDIA and Elena Burceanu from Bitdefender. The two events illustrate two important directions in the development of Romania’s AI ecosystem: research and international connectivity on one side, and the practical deployment of AI agents in business on the other.

2. Google expands its massive bet on proprietary AI chips through Marvell

Google and Marvell Technology have reached an agreement under which Marvell will develop chips and components for Google’s AI infrastructure, while Google will receive the right to purchase up to $12.2 billion worth of Marvell shares. The partnership includes technology connected to TPUs (Tensor Processing Units — processors specifically designed by Google for artificial intelligence workloads), inference accelerators, networking, storage and memory controllers. Depending on the achievement of commercial targets, the agreement could generate approximately $120 billion in revenue for Marvell through 2033.

The significance goes beyond a single contract between two companies. Google is strengthening its own alternative to Nvidia’s GPU ecosystem while also diversifying its supplier base beyond Broadcom. The AI race is increasingly becoming a contest over control of chips, memory, interconnects and data centers, not simply over which company has the most powerful model.

3. Stripe acquires OpenRouter and moves directly into the infrastructure companies use to choose AI models

Stripe, the fintech company founded by Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison and headquartered primarily in San Francisco and Dublin, has announced the acquisition of OpenRouter, an AI startup based in New York, in a deal valued by sources at more than $8 billion. Founded in 2023, OpenRouter provides developers with a single interface through which they can access and compare hundreds of AI models and currently processes more than 10 trillion tokens per day.

The transaction matters because Stripe is not buying an AI model developer, but a layer sitting between users and the models themselves. OpenRouter can determine which model is used, at what cost and for which task, while Stripe already controls a major piece of global payment infrastructure. Combining the two points toward the emergence of a new category of AI economic infrastructure: automatic model routing, token metering and payments for model usage.

4. OpenAI and Anthropic receive only C+ in the first major technical assessment of frontier AI labs

GuideLight AI Standards is an independent nonprofit organization founded in 2026 by Steven Adler and Page Hedley, both former OpenAI specialists — Adler worked in safety research, while Hedley worked on policy and ethics. The organization says it does not accept funding from AI companies or their employees and aims to establish concrete standards for the safety of frontier AI systems. In its first assessment of major AI laboratories, published on August 18 and based on publicly available information current through that date, GuideLight evaluated Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI and Meta.

Anthropic and OpenAI received C+, each scoring 2.50 out of 5; Google received D+ with 1.50; xAI received D− with 0.83; and Meta received F with 0.67. C+ was the highest grade achieved in the assessment, but GuideLight’s technical scale runs from 0 — not implemented, to 5 — fully implemented, with the letter grade derived from the average scores. No company scored above 3 on any of the six practices assessed, and GuideLight explicitly states that none of the companies fully implements any of them. This was GuideLight’s first assessment of frontier AI companies, so there are no previous GuideLight scores for these five companies that would allow a direct comparison over time.

The six areas analyzed are agent activity logging, monitoring effectiveness, blocking dangerous actions before execution, shutting systems down when suspicious patterns emerge, third-party evaluation, and the existence of a containment plan for a model that escapes intended controls. The central conclusion is that the industry is currently more advanced at detecting problems than at actually preventing or containing them.

5. China officially responds to a US plan that could divide the world into two AI ecosystems

On August 19, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded during the ministry’s regular press briefing to Reuters reports that the United States was preparing an AI coalition and could ask a number of countries to choose between an American framework and one promoted by China. Lin said Beijing opposes forcing countries to choose sides or creating blocs in the field of AI and called for respect for every country’s “digital sovereignty.”

Lin’s wording is significant: every country, he said, should have the right to choose its partners based on its own circumstances and development needs. Beyond diplomatic language, the stakes are substantial. AI is increasingly being treated like telecom infrastructure or semiconductors, where countries may eventually face pressure to choose between two competing technological and geopolitical ecosystems.

6. China bets on a “ChatGPT moment” for robots — and Unitree says it is getting closer

At the World Robot Conference in Beijing, Chinese companies showcased humanoid robots and systems capable of performing tasks increasingly close to real industrial applications, including object handling, sorting, manufacturing and other repetitive activities. At the same time, the CEO of Unitree, one of China’s best-known humanoid robotics companies, said the sector was approaching its own “ChatGPT moment” — the point at which a technology that has existed for years suddenly crosses into mass adoption.

The two developments point to the same transition: the industry is moving from spectacular demonstrations toward real, scalable economic work. In the first half of 2026, global humanoid robot shipments nearly quadrupled to approximately 19,100 units, with Chinese manufacturers dominating that growth.

7. AI data centers are reshaping Europe’s economic map as access to energy becomes more important than proximity to major cities

New hyperscale data centers designed for AI are increasingly being built farther away from Europe’s largest cities. According to JLL data analyzed by Reuters, projects scheduled to become operational between 2026 and 2028 will be located an average of 175 kilometers from major hubs, compared with just 46 kilometers for projects delivered between 2022 and 2025. The reason is straightforward: data centers used for training AI models require enormous amounts of electricity, land and cooling capacity, all of which are becoming harder and more expensive to secure in London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Dublin.

JLL describes the shift clearly: data centers are increasingly being built where the power is, rather than bringing power to where demand already exists. If the trend continues, AI could redirect billions of euros in investment toward European regions that have previously sat outside the continent’s main technology centers. For Romania, the availability of energy and land could become a genuine competitive advantage if grid infrastructure and permitting processes can keep pace.

8. Germany calls on Europe to step up in humanoid robotics — even as it already hosts one of the continent’s strongest players, NEURA Robotics

Germany’s engineering industry association VDMA called on August 19 for humanoid robotics and “physical AI” to move to the center of the European political agenda. Hartmut Rauen, VDMA’s deputy executive director, said Germany and Europe need to build a complete value chain, including local production of critical components. The call comes after the strong stock-market debut of China’s Unitree and at a time when Chinese manufacturers currently dominate global humanoid robot shipments.

Germany is not starting from zero. NEURA Robotics, based in Metzingen, is one of Europe’s strongest companies in humanoid robotics and Physical AI and, following its latest funding announcement, one of the best-capitalized European bets in the sector. In June, it announced a Series C round of up to $1.4 billion, presented as the largest funding round ever secured by a full-stack robotics company, with investors and partners including NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Bosch, Schaeffler and the European Investment Bank. Together with the Technical University of Munich, NEURA is also building Europe’s largest research and training center for Physical AI.
